In 1994 at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), 179 governments adopted a landmark Programme of Action which set out to empower women and girls for their sake, and for the benefit of their families, communities and nations.
In November 2019, the Nairobi Summit was co-convened by UNFPA and Government of Kenya and Denmark to mark the 25th anniversary of ICPD. ICPD25 was aimed at mobilising the political and financial commitments to fulfil the promises made in 1994.
Professor Gita Sen, a noted academician and women’s rights activist, who participated in both the conferences explains the significance of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and what the journey has been.
She was awarded the prestigious Dan David Prize for her expansive work in the fields of population policies, reproductive and sexual health, women’s rights, poverty, labour markets and global governance.
