The Climate Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have something in common: Disproportionate effects on the most vulnerable.
As crises of inequalities, we are not on the same boat nor have the same safety nets when we talk about access to vaccines or resilience to climate emergencies. On average, G7 countries have vaccinated at least 66% of their population with one dose and they are now administering booster doses.
Meanwhile, only 8.5% of the African population has received one dose.
G20 leaders met this past weekend and the richest nations failed to reach a compromise on concrete actions to accelerate vaccination worldwide. In their statement, there was no mention of the TRIPS waiver that would allow the manufacture of generic & biosimilar vaccines worldwide. Instead, rich countries are pushing for alternative (unrealistic and ineffective) measures that count on voluntary tech transfers or vaccine dose donations.
This is actually a strategy to stall the TRIPS waiver debate and its approval while millions of people have died from COVID-19. The same is true for the climate crisis. G20 economies failed to commit to concrete actions, such as a net-zero emissions target or a bold energy transition plan.
