Very sad moment. A titan of a woman has finally taken leave. Unique and beloved Gigi. I am sure all of her friends in the Philippines and the wider diaspora of movements she touched and was in, will feel her breath passing. Will try to send something to Gigi tomorrow. I hope they write a book about her.

To the Family of the Late Gigi Francisco, This is to express my deep condolence for the passing away of Gigi a very dear friend. Gigi even if my association with her was just a few years gave me a lasting impression of her innate character of goodness. She is very passionate about her advocacy for women’s causes which she continued to do even when she was struck with illness. Gigi and I were members of the Philippine delegation to the UN Commission on Population and Development 45th Session in New York. I was then a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Commission (POPCOM). Gigi helped me craft a brief statement which I read before the Session and the Philippines was given a big round of applause. At that time, we had a very contentious draft document for adoption before the conclusion of the Session. My statement was followed by many countries in support of the Chair’s draft. The result: we produced a consensus document that favoured our RH advocacy among others. Since then, we developed and forged partnerships in all the national and international conferences we attended together. All along, she was ever the caring, helpful, supportive, thoughtful, generous, objective and fair Gigi – all traits worthy of emulation. To us who were left behind, we shall continue to follow her example and continue her advocacy for feminism. Again our sincere condolences. May she rest in peace and take Gigi in His bosom.
Ben Deleon – President, The Forum for Family Planning and Development

Very sad to learn about Gigi – your close colleague and friend, but to many of us who did not work with her, she is an awesome, inspiring feminist. It is with great sadness that I must inform you that today a strong and beloved feminist left us, Gigi Francisco. She was not only a dedicated educator, academic, and activist committed to gender, economic and social justice but also a lively and wise human being. She joined the IALLA team as a convener back in 2004 when we organized the first IALLA and was an active member of GEO, with whom we shared many activities, mainly during the different editions of the World Social Forum. For those who do not know her, Gigi was the coordinator of DAWN for many years and a professor at Miriam College in the Philippines. Rest in peace dear Gigi. Best wishes,
Marcela Hernandez

What sad news. I first met Gigi at our Ocho Rios assembly, where we worked half the night on the declaration. She was strong, fiercely committed to equality and a good ally. I know how important she was to Celita. The last time we met was when I spoke for her at Miriam college, a beautiful place. The struggle for social justice will be weaker without her and I will miss her.

To all of Gigi’s children and grandchildren and siblings, to all her beloved friends and comrades in DAWN, I send you deep condolences and the warmest, most inspiring memories of Gigi. I first met her in 1990 at a big national women’s conference in Manila and thought she was the most radical, brilliant, strategically savvy and at the same time loving and passionate feminist I’d ever met – so beyond anyone from our movements in the U.S. The thing that sticks with me from that time is her incredibly sharp analysis of how activists should deal with the global financial institutions and her uncompromising spirit, and also how she brought all the issues of social and gender justice together. In that way, she was the essence of DAWN – an organization that has shaped my thinking in countless ways. Gigi was also great fun – never taking herself too seriously but always taking the world’s pains and struggles, and love for her amazing kids, very seriously. We will all miss her greatly, her intensity, her passion, her great wisdom, and her wit.

To Gigi’s daughters, sons, grandchildren and friends from all over the world, During the last few months I have often recalled many moments with Gigi. This morning, I was taken vividly by the memory of the last time we saw each other in August 2010. We were saying goodbye at the reception on the IMMB in India. In those few minutes, we talked about the Brazilian sandals I had taken to her but also had a short but intense political fight over whether or not to engage with ALBA. Then, we exchanged very warm hugs. This moment encapsulates, in a nutshell, my relationship with Gigi: much sharing, lots of friendship and the constant peppering of political disagreements. There are many other moments I am tempted to revive of Gigi as the amazing human being, political activist and feminist thinker she was. For example, the very hard task of taking Gigi back to her home through the gardens of Cocoyoc, after the party that accidentally became the commemoration of my and Gita’s 50th birthdays. Or our roaming through downtown Rio, in 2000, to see the art exhibitions put in place to mark the 500 hundred years of Brazil’s colonization, which triggered complex conversations about art and politics and convergences and divergences across our post-colonial experiences. Most principally, I can neither forget her hilarious sexualized parody of “I will survive” chanted at the back of a van as we head towards Cape Point, after DAWN’s 20th anniversary, nor the inevitable controversy we had around the ideological meaning of social contracts. I could go on and on recapturing different places and stories woven into our common path through life that is worth living. But my preferred shared moment with Gigi is still the night when we played billiards in Monterey, during the 2002 FFD Conference. As we laughed making lots of errors and drinking beer, an eighty-year-old blind pianist in the background played unforgettable boleros. The world and we will miss you very much, my dear Gigi.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Yesterday we received the sad news of the passing of our dear friend, Gigi Francisco. I met Gigi back in 1999 in preparation for the WTO meeting in Seattle. I was with WEDO and a novice about trade and its relation to women, but in preparing a Day of Women in Seattle, I sought out Gigi as she was recommended by a colleague as an expert in this area. She gave freely and graciously of her time. She took the time to explain processes and political dynamics. We met face to face then when we faced off with the riot gear police on the streets of Seattle. I took a classic picture of Gigi wrapped in a cloth with “a gender agenda for the WTO.” Over the years, it was nice to run into her and although we would sometimes come from different camps, Gigi could see beyond that and respect you for your whole. We worked closely on the Women’s Working Group on FfD in 2007 in the lead-up to FfD Doha Conference. She was a brilliant speaker and will be sorely missed not only for her intelligence and activism but for the true person she was and is in our hearts. We will mourn her loss and honour her memory. Rest in peace.
Rosa G. Lizarde – Global Director, Feminist Task Force

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am extremely touched by this news. Gigi was the first feminist economist to provide me with an interview during my Masters’s research. She was very kind to spend a relevant amount of time debating her knowledge of the processes I was intrigued about and to put me in touch with Marina who was then in UNIFEM. Those were key moments of inspiration for my feminist journey in this world. Later on, Gigi´s restlessness in Doha and throughout the WWG on the FfD process marked me deeply. Those were my initial years of international advocacy (at that time as IGTN) and she definitely pushed the bar high for all of us, younger activists. I will always remember her. Please share my most warm hugs and cariño from Rio de Janeiro to Marina, Anita and all the powerful women in the DAWN network. We will continue fighting until all women are free.
Diana Aguiar Orrico

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– This news is really heartbreaking, and it is a huge loss to the international women’s movement and to the DAWN family. It seems like only yesterday when I last saw Gigi and Marina at a meeting in Accra. My deep condolences to her family, friends and comrades. May Gigi’s life continue to inspire us all to do better.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Though I have been out of the loop for some years now, I fondly remember those days with you all and Gigi…with her passion and energy. I am grateful, as I am sure we all are, to have spent such productive time with her and everyone else….we made a difference and she made a difference to us -as well as to the greater good. I shall light a candle for her. Please convey my deepest respect to her family and close comrades.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am really saddened to learn this. Gigi will certainly be greatly missed. I immediately thought of so many spaces we shared, debates, actions, discussions… Always such a bright feminist and passionate activist, with a big heart. Today I celebrate her, I am grateful for her life, her amazing legacy of fierce activism … and the light she brought to our struggles. Abrazos grandes and much love and solidarity,

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– My sincere condolences to her family and the DAWN team. I remember seeing her on one of the WTO Hong Kong DVDs that I got from Focus on the Global South during a training workshop in 2006. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– It is a great loss for the ICAE family and the adult learning community. May God give patience to her family members during this sad part of their lives. I am shocked by this news…she was the first person I met at Montevideo Airport (IALLA III) and we came to the hotel from the airport together. At first, I thought she was also a participant but the next morning I discovered she was our trainer!! Today I have come to know, she has departed… I can still see her face…the cheerful moments…May God keep her in never-ending peace!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– We received the news of Gigi’s death with great sadness. She was among the first persons I met during the formative years of TWN-Africa. In the succeeding period, she has been part of the DAWN team that we have worked with in a variety of contexts. Not too long ago she was in Accra for meetings that TWN-Africa co-organised with DAWN. A person of great commitment, a valuable comrade, a great loss. We in TWN-Africa share the sorrow of her family.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Since seeing the message yesterday about Gigi, I have been tearful and benumbed with deep sadness – we have each lost someone who had such precious qualities that one fears the mould was broken and one will not know her again. It hurts, even though the call is to celebrate her life. I have been anxious and praying for some years – at least she did not leave abruptly during or immediately after that last visit to Fiji so that she and her family had some time to grow into acceptance and to surround her with love. I hope she did not suffer much. My thoughts and prayers are with Gigi and her children, grandchildren and family, and a multitude of friends.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I was so sorry to hear the news about Gigi. As mum said, we were away at a workshop together when we heard, and there were many in the room who knew and worked with Gigi. We will miss that fierce passion, and the warmth she had for her sisters in the movement. She always made me feel welcome, and a part of something that was possible. We’ve been thinking of you at DAWN since we heard the news, you, her comrades who have fought together and laughed together over so many years. Even though we missed last week’s mass, if there is another way we can remember her here in Fiji, please let us know. Love and hugs,

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– So saddened by the news- I experienced Gigi’s vitality and energy in Mauritius – hard to think she has gone – it is like a flame put out. I got news of her on and off and admired the way she struggled against cancer, hoping that some of the alternative treatments would work – Sunila kept coming back to me. Two most amazing wonderful women- we are losing too many too soon. Much love and hugs to you Gita – it is hard to lose a friend so early.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Adieu, dear Gigi, I join you in mourning the loss of as well as celebrating Gigi’s beautiful life. I only saw Gigi in person twice – during the DAWN Training Institute in 2003 and when I visited her at Miriam College in January 2005. We exchanged occasional emails since then. Gigi has always reminded me of the importance of the global feminist movement, and the necessity to link back to our homeland, wherever we are in the world. Most importantly, we exchanged banters about how to be in love and stay in love even though we have become too exhausted to even think of love. If she were alive today, I would proudly tell her that I am in the process of publishing in the Philippines, something that she had encouraged me to do. I can’t put into words my deep appreciation of the values she lived by. In solidarity,
Cirila P. Limpangog – Adjunct Lecturer, School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, RMIT University
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– It is with great sadness that I learned of Gigi’s passing. Gigi committed her life to make a difference and I knew that from the moment I met her in the 1980s. She was passionate about making sure that issues affecting women were fully understood and women’s leadership nurtured to transform systematic discrimination. I am proud to have introduced Gigi to DAWN when I was its regional coordinator for Asia, at its founding. Gigi’s leadership and spirit quickly made her a treasured leader of the network and of the women’s movement. She was too ill to see me in May when I was in Manila but am glad that my message of friendship and love were conveyed to her and she knew how much she was cared for. Farewell dear friend, and farewell Gigi. Your spirit lives on.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Dear friends, It was a very sad day when I read of Gigi’s passing. My deepest condolences to her family during this difficult time. When I met her over the last few years, I always was struck by her spunk – telling us stories of her youth with the same vigour as of her feminist struggles. Will remember her laugh as a memory of all her warmth. May she rest in peace. Warmest,
Roshni Nuggehalli
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– It is truly very sad news to know about the passing of Gigi. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Dear Members of DAWN & APWW, It was with great sorrow that we, members of JAWW (Japan Women’s Watch), received the notice that our dear friend, Gigi Francisco, had been ill for the last few years and has passed away. Besides Gigi’s great contribution to women’s issues, especially in the Asia Pacific Region, Gigi was such a warm and great friend to all of us. I, personally, remember the time when Gigi came to Japan, and we, women NGOs, spent a wonderful evening together. We offer our deep condolences to Gigi’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.
Mitchiko Nakamura – Advisor, JAWW
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– My condolences.

Marita Pareja
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Thank you very much for your message about Gigi Francisco’s passing; I am very saddened with the news but happy that Sergy Floro, Gunseli Berik and myself picked a quote from Gigi for the beginning of Ch. 3 of our co-authored book Gender, Development and Globalization. Economics as if All People Mattered which is being really eased by Routledge this week. It’ll work as our recognition of Gigi’s legacy and Sergy will send you or her family a copy. With my deep condolences to DAWN for the big loss. Warm regards,
Lourdes Benería – Professor Emerita, Cornell University
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Very, very sad news. My condolences to her family and friends. She was a great and strong leader.
Mme Mama Koité Doumbia
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I just want to share my goodbye to this great woman who leaves us so soon. I was a DAWN young feminist trainee from 2003 (Uruguay) and it was an enormous gift to have met her, her smartness, good humour, and intelligence. My deepest and sincere farewell,
Natalia Mori
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Dear DAWN friends, Dear Anjani, So saddened by the news. One of the highlights of the DDD in Mauritius for me was meeting Gigi who I had heard so much about- – experienced her vitality and energy and amazing optimism. Hard to think she has gone- it is like a flame put out! I got news of her on and off and admired the way she struggled against cancer, hoping that some of the alternative treatments would work – Sunila kept coming back to me. Two most amazing wonderful women- we are losing too many too soon. My heartfelt condolences to all of you. In sadness and solidarity,
Amrita Chhachi
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– It was a great shock to learn about the passing of a very dear friend, colleague and mentor, Ms Gigi. I was fortunate to meet late Gigi in 2010 at one of the first conferences that changed my life in Suva, Fiji, organised by DAWN and other networks. There, I had the opportunity to have met Gigi personally, she was energetic and full of fun. I remember she came up with the watermelon Papaya energizer, where she showed us how to dance and sing the song. We all laughed and woke up from the sleepy afternoon after we had our very big lunch. Gigi – a true leader, a legend. So long, Gigi. Love from the Solomon Islands,
Ender Naomi Rence
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– It is a very sad piece of news. Miss Gigi and wish her rest in peace.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I was deeply saddened to receive the news of Gigi’s departure from our midst. While you have brilliantly summarised her contributions to feminist thinking and activism for gender and social justice, as well as the wonderful aspects of her unique personality, I would like to add a personal reflection on the impact she made on many of us as individuals. Although I had the opportunity to interact with her in person only a few times, each of those left an indelible mark. She was the first person to encourage me to think differently, to avoid political correctness, and to stay true to my inner self, even if this brought criticism and judgement from others – she made me question why others’ opinions should matter at all if one acts with inner integrity. Her own personal journey, including experiments with spiritual paths, was deeply inspiring to me. I salute a great soul who will long be remembered with affection and gratitude. Sincerely,
Srilatha Batliwala
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I was deeply impressed with Gigi! I had never met her before but had heard a lot about her, and I remember thinking, wow, this is a great analytical thinker, who pricks right through thin air. She was no bullshit, and very compassionate. I regret not having met her more often, it was a great honour to have known her, I am sending my deepest condolences to her family and all her colleagues at DAWN. Hugs,
Sascha Gabizon – Executive Director WECF / WICF

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I want to transmit my condolences to Gigi´s family. I shared with her many talks and debates within the Civil Society Reflection Group on Global Development. Indeed, she always made clear and outstanding contributions during our exchange of ideas and final report. She was, of course, a determined advocate of gender equality and human rights. Her carisma earned our respect and admiration. We will miss her. Farewell amiga!
Alejandro Chanona
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am so sad to hear that Gigi’s marvellous life has ended – I remember her as you described her – full of energy, insight, fun, and as a very very strong activist. Though I haven’t seen her for many many years I remember her well and I am very sad that she has passed away so young really. However, she packed a great deal into that life and the world is a better place for her efforts for social justice. Rest in peace dear Gigi. A group of us who went to Beijing 20 years ago are meeting in Melbourne tomorrow and I’m sure we will remember Gigi there. With warmest wishes and condolences to all of Gigi’s family and friends,
Janet Hunt (formerly Director of IWDA)

Alejandra Santillana
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– This is indeed a tough time. Losing Gigi is a big blow. It’s tough to come to terms with this tragedy. I hope you are coping as well as is possible.
Hibist Kassa
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am sorry to hear about the loss of Gigi. I remember her powerful facilitation at IALLA 1st. I would put a photo of her there in 2004. I am sorry that I could not have enough time to hear and learn from her before she passed.
Yoko Arai

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Since seeing the message yesterday about Gigi, I have been tearful and benumbed with a deep sadness – we have each lost someone who had such precious qualities that one fears the mould was broken and one will not know her like again. It hurts, even though the call is to celebrate her life. I have been anxious and praying for some years – at least she did not leave abruptly during or immediately after that last visit to Fiji so that she and family had some time to grow into acceptance and to surround her with love. I hope she did not suffer much. My thoughts and prayers are with Gigi and her children, grandchildren and family, and multitude of friends.
Gracie Fong
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I know how dear to you Gigi was and how much she contributed to DAWN and to the movement. Though you knew this day would come, that does not make the loss any easier. I just hope Gigi’s last days were peaceful and comfortable. All my love to you,
Adrienne Germain
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– As I read tributes to Gigi (while recovering from a bad cold I had caught in a downpour in South Cotabato [where I was last week when I received texts from Anna Leah and Prescy about Gigi’s passing]), it occurred to me that women of Gigi’s caliber write their own obituaries with courage, integrity, and clear headedness as they live their lives in the trenches surrounding women’s collective condition — whether these be in large international fora or in one-on-one backlash against feminist values and principles. Go in peace, Gigi. One evening in the late 80’s, as you and I walked back to our quarters from a workshop on women’s health where you supported my unabashed use of the ‘f’ word in the midst of polite hostility from some co-participants, you offered me a safe haven for ideas, saying that, “when push comes to shove”, I could share your desk if I needed physical and psychological space in which to work. I was edified and emboldened by your offer because even if we didn’t know each other before then, I could feel the sisterhood in which my work is nourished and moored. Eternal rest be yours, Gigi. I thank you for your kindness and continue to be edified and emboldened by your example.
Theresa (Terret) D. Balayon
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– As you will have received condolences from different WIDE+ members (previously WIDE), as a network, we would also like to express our condolences to Gigi’s family, friends and members of DAWN. It is with great grief that we received the news of Gigi’s passing away. She has been a very active feminist who gave a strong voice to many experiences of women and was well known among WIDE members. As one of the linkages to WIDE, she spoke at our 2008 Conference. We wish you all strength ahead. Best regards,
Gea Meijers on behalf of WIDE+ Caucus
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I would like to express my deepest condolences to the loss of Gigi. She is wonderful. I find some feminists very difficult to approach or I feel intimidated or excluded. But Gigi was different. She was so accommodating. Very encouraging. She noticed everyone, and recognized each one of us. She was not shy to show when she was not sure like all the other people, which is such an amazing humbleness for such an accomplished person. She was humble and at the same time, inspiring. Very joyful and open to anyone who went to her. I have not had much direct personal interaction with Gigi, but I have profound respect for her intelligence, personality and integrity. I am sorry that I am not able to have any further opportunity to interact with her. May her soul rest in peace. With deepest respect to Gigi,
Kyoko Kusakabe
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am deeply saddened by the news of Gigi’s passing. Please accept my condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It was an honor to have known Gigi – such a great caring person, mentor and leader. I had the opportunity to work with Gigi for the first time in 2010. On the very first day we met, we started chatting and then working like we have known each other for a long time. She had a magical talent to make people – even much younger allies – feel welcome immediately. Earlier that year, I was planning to organize the first Asia-Pacific intensive course on gender and macroeconomics in Thailand during the summer. Then, political conflicts escalated in central Bangkok. We had to change the course venue to another country on short notice. Through Marina, I approached to Gigi. On top of all the work that she, DAWN and Miriam College already had, Gigi agreed to host the course at College. She strongly felt the needs of having more young feminist scholars and development practitioners who can work for economic justice. And she trusted me and the initiative although we haven’t met by then. Thanks to Gigi and a number of staff at DAWN and Miriam College, we completed the course with great success, and the Asia and Pacific network of scholars, development practitioners and activists on gender and macroeconomics started to grow. She inspired me and many other young fellows through her work and friendship. Even when she had been ill, she never lost her kind heart for caring others. I will truly miss her, her laugher and her generosity. May her soul rest in peace.
Yumiko Yamamoto, Policy Specialist, UNDP Bangkok Regional Centre
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I would like to share my sadness for the passing of Gigi, an outstanding activist on women’s rights, who I met while participating in the UNESCO Network in Women’s Studies / Gender Research at Miriam College, Manila, and in Bangkok, together with Patricia Licuanan and other colleagues. I learnt a lot from her wise vision of women in global scenarios. I also had the privilege of having a chapter written by her and Peggy Antrobus – Women’s movements negotiating social contracts in multilateral inter-government and trans-national inter-movement spaces- in the book I edited in Argentina, in English and Spanish: Feminisms, Democratization and Radical Democracy: Case studies in South and Central America, Middle East and North Africa. I send my deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. We will never forget Gigi!
Graciela Di Marco – Directora, Centro de Estudios sobre Democratización y Derechos Humanos (CEDEHU), Universidad Nacional de San Martín-UNSAM
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– So sorry to hear that Gigi has passed away. I want to send my condolences to her friends and family. I recall her passion, energy and sharp analysis. The women’s movement has lost a valiant leader who will live on in our hearts. Best wishes,
Diane Elson – Chair of Women’s Budget Group, UK
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Dear DAWN EC and secretariat members, Receive all my love and solidarity in this moment. When I think about Gigi, the image that comes to me is of her smile, intellectua and activism sharing capacity (and generosity), and, the feeling, is that she is strongly present, alive, inside myself (thought the great learnings and inspiration I was lucky to get from her). For me, it is also a moment for self-reflection on how much the learning and sharing processes with DAWN have contributed for me to be able to handle and enjoy the many phases (work and personal), I’ve experienced in the past years. Thanks so much to you all! While sad and missing Gigi, it is also a gift to realize how strong her presence in my life has been… I hope to be more frequently in contact with you all… Through the winds from Mozambique and Rio, receive my love, hugs and wishes that our dear Gigi continues to inspire our DAWN daily.
Angela Collet
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– On behalf of FEIM, I’d like to express our condolences for the passing of Gigi Francisco. Her work is undoubtedly a priceless legacy to all of us who still struggle for women’s and girls’ rights. We extend our message to her family and beloved ones, as well as to all the DAWN team. Best,
Mabel Bianco – President, FEIM
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Oh no, when did this happen? She was and remains a beautiful encounter and amazing soul. May her powerful essence live on.
Gathoni JBlessol – Queer Social Rights Activist
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I just heard about Gigi’s passing away and was reading the messages from friends for Gigi on DAWNnet, and just wanted to also express what an amazing woman Gigi was. She was a strong advocate and feminist who achieved so much in her lifetime. She will be very missed and very much remembered. If you could please pass on my condolences to her family as well. Thanks,
Alison Aggarwal – Sydney, Australia
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I wanted to belatedly express my condolences and to say that I admired Gigi’s strength, fortitude, and commitment from near and far. I saw her last at CSW, not this year but last. She was in good spirits and fully immersed in the process. I took this as the only evidence that mattered that her own fight against cancer was behind her. I was wrong about that. But it did not matter, as she was doing what she clearly loved, among friends and colleagues who cherished her. May she rest in peace. With condolences,
LaShawn Jefferson – PO, Ford Foundation
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I also wanted to add my condolences. I, too, was pleased to see Gigi this past year and thought she looked remarkably well. I was so sad to hear of her passing. He legacy continues with her colleagues and DAWN, the institution that she loved so well. My heart is with you all.

Salamat kasama, comrade, mentor, mother, sister, pakner-in-crime, co-conspirator, colleague, kakulitan, ka-tsismisan… Sampung bagsak kay Gigi!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– With great sadness, I hear about the passing away of Gigi. For many years, we shared feminist knowledge, struggles and progressive perspectives. Her death is a big loss for the global women’s rights movement. We will almost remember her and her contribution to our common cause.
Christa Wichterich, Germany
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– My heart goes out to Gigi. She bravely fought a good fight not just for herself but for our people, especially for women’s causes. And boy was she passionate about having a lot of feminist economists, knowing that women need not just political liberation but economic empowerment as well. You deserve your rest, my dear Gigi. We love you dearly. You have served this country well. Hanggang sa muling pagkikita, Gigi. Saludo kaming lahat sa yo.
Jessica Cantos
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Gigi will be remembered, but missed, by many activists in Papua New Guinea whose lives she has touched. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Writing to send a note of condolence and strength to friends and family. And also a note of thanks to Gigi for being such an inspiration. I have closely followed and been inspired by Gigi’s work. I had the opportunity to meet her in 2007 as part of a course I attended of the International Council on Adult Education (ICAE) in Uruguay. Grateful that I had the chance to briefly know her. I know she has touched and inspired many. Her legacy will live on. Warmly,
Subhalakshmi Nandi
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– May the angels lead Gigi into paradise. We are told “eye has not seen, nor ear heard what God has prepared for those who love her.” And Gigi showed her love for God by her love ad service to all. “Her going out from us is as utter devastation, but she is at peace.” (Proverbs, 8). May we all be at peace knowing she is at peace.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am so sad to hear about this saddest news. Thai politic take me out of Thailand and Asia and that is also out of touch of old and dear friends like Gigi. My condolence to all of you. Gigi will be always remembered by me and surely by many friends. … She is a woman who have live the most colourful life that I have met. I always feel thankful for all support and encouragment that Gigi has given to me during the past two decades since we have met, both on personal level and on our work. Rest in Peace Gigi.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I was very sad to read the news about Gigi: during my years working with feminist NGO Banúlacht, which acted as the WIDE Irish Platform, we constantly drew on Gigi’s work and engaged her through DAWN and the IGTN. I met her only a few times, at events relating to the Beijing reviews and the WTO, and was always impressed with her analysis and commitment and her passionate engagement. Sincere condolences to her colleagues, friends and family,
Maeve Taylor (formerly WIDE Irish Platform and Trade Justice Ireland)

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– The news of Gigi’s passing brought a great sense of loss with it. I think the last time we met was at the Social Forum in Hyderabad India – before that too our meetings had been intermittent. But she was difficult to forget. She was a committed and warm hearted woman – I’m sure she will be missed by all those who knew her. My thoughts are with her family and friends.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– To many of us in the women’s movement, Gigi was a friend, comrade, a fellow feminist, and SRHR advocate. May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand (Old Irish blessing). Our sincerest condolences to her family and friends!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– “Sharing with all of you, the passing of a wonderful feminist – Josefa ‘Gigi” Francisco, who started feminist groups and was with Miriam College in Philippines. I am sad that she is gone. I met her when I was volunteering with AWARE, TWC2 and later our paths crossed many times. When I was the Gender Studies Programme Coordinator at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies we examined approaches to have joint discussions between her Institute and ISEAS. I learnt the most from her on Budgets, State Proportionality on Budgets and the Impact of Financial Crisis on Women and Girls. Amongst the so many things she gave, I will never forget her sincerity in wanting many to get into the fold to ask for gender equity, for the rural women, all peppered like any Filipina, with much laughter and a rich humour. A generous person. She cared for others and sincere in wanting to build up people. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and yourself for the cause of women. Blessings and Rest in peace. Beautiful masses, I’m sure, will be said for you. You have been great for the soul.”

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I was offline for a while and just heard about the passing of Gigi. There are no words to express the sadness and sorrow that I am feeling : I just lost a sister and a friend, as well as a model and comrade in my activism. The global movement for gender, social, economic and ecological justice will also miss her terribly. I am attaching a picture of her with some of the EC members in Penang, during the preparatory meeting for the latest DAWN Global Institute.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– As 2003 DAWNEE, in Bangalore; I remember her with all the staff of DAWN helping us to build solid pilars of the new generation of activist. Be sure Gigi, we did a great job and we are ready to continue what you started. Rest in peace.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I offer my deep condolences to Gigi’s family and friends, as we celebrate her life and contribution to the Philippines’, Asian and global feminist movements. As DAWN Coordinator, she pursued the tremendous work of the Third World feminist network in key spaces globally, despite her illness and declining health. I remember her brilliant articulation, with a smile, of a Southern feminist analysis at DAWN and other international meetings over the past decades. Most recently, we corresponded on her keen interest in circulating Peggy Antrobus’ article on DAWN. Farewell – fare thee well, Gigi.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– We knew Gigi through our women workers’ program, Irene Xavier knew her much better than me. We are from Friends of Women in Malaysia. I knew her many years ago when we met her at a University (can’t remember which one) in Manila. She gave her honest opinion when giving her ideas on feminist political groups in Malaysia. I greatly respected her view points. She played an important role in training regionally especially on women worker issues. Thank you Gigi – we hope to carry on the work you dedicated your life to. Our deep condolences to all those close to her. Warm regards,
Suguna Papachan (on behalf of Friends of Women, Malaysia)
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– I am shocked and saddened by the news yesterday that Gigi is no more. With a sense of the unreal I send my sincere condolences and thoughts to all members of Gigi’s family and all members of the DAWN family, Gigi’s extended family. I join friends at this hour in remembrance of a comrade who never hesitated to disagree with the powers that be. Her sense of truthfulness made her special. She was also an excellent administrator and efficient in her prompt replies, no matter how serious or trivial the issues raised. Alas, her going is extremely premature and one cant help feeling the unfairness and the sorrow of it all.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Josefa “Gigi” Francisco, a remarkable woman, fierce feminist, women’s rights activist, and an inspiring educator and mentor passed away on July 22, 2015. The face of southern feminism will not be what it is today if it weren’t for Prof. Gigi Francisco’s valiant efforts and perseverance. She has been at the forefront of the women’s movement in the Philippines and has co-founded various organizations such as the Women and Gender Institute (WAGI) – Miriam College. She was the General Coordinator for the Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) from 2008 until 2014, and until the very end of her journey she continued to support the advocacy of DAWN, pushing for women’s rights agenda. As fierce and active as she is, Prof. Gigi Francisco was also a brilliant educator and mentor to many students and faculty of Miriam College. She was the Chair of the International Studies Department under the College of International Humanitarian and Development Studies. She has truly lived a full and meaningful life for every woman in this world, and her life and strength will be celebrated by many.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Back in the 1990s, when Gigi and I were both active in international civil society networks, people used to joke that she and I were competing for who could accumulate the most air miles. Gigi and I are no longer competing. The competition is now between Lidy Nacpil of Jubilee South and Ellene Sana of the Center for Migrant Advocacy. I don’t claim to have been a close friend of Gigi, but we worked closely on a number of projects, and in these ventures, I developed great respect for her. She was one of the first members of the board of Focus on the Global South and as such she made sure that Focus would have a strong gender perspective and good politics. Because she contributed so much to launching Focus on the right path, I could not say no when Gigi asked me to teach here in Miriam more than ten years ago. I did, for a few semesters. I enjoyed teaching, but I must say that Gigi was a much better teacher than me. But there is one thing for which I will always be grateful to Gigi–as well as to many of you who are here today–and that is for making me a feminist. Thank you, Gigi, and farewell.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– The Philippine Commission on Women celebrates Gigi’s vibrant life which she lived to the fullest. A staunch fighter for women’s human rights, Gigi consistently articulated her positions and statements on all issues affecting women and gender equality. As a member of official Philippine delegations to the UN Commission on the Status Women and ESCAP meetings, she painstakingly advised the government officials on the debates around various contentious provisions of ‘agreed conclusions’ and declarations. Thank you, Gigi, for making the task of reviewing documents easier. Thank you for your passion and commitment to correct abuses and violations. Thank you for your love for your family, friends, work and country. Rest now! We love you!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Vale Gigi a wonderful women, a fierce feminist, a progressive women’s rights activist, an ally, mentor and friend. You will be missed. Up to the very end, Gigi was supporting fellow activists in DAWN through the intricate challenges of pushing a progressive women’s rights agenda through the UN regional and international processes. There will be many accolades written and spoken of Gigi, and I can only add my own personal voice to these. I have to admit that when I first met Gigi in 1999 she was a key member of Development Alternatives for Women in the New Era (DAWN), a key Asia Pacific network based in the South for women of the South, and I was an international development student at the University of New South Wales. From 2008 – 2014 Gigi was the global coordinator for DAWN, and over the years I have had the opportunity to work with her on a number of issues. Gigi’s sharp intellect, clear and informed opinions and the ability to engage in any discussions made her very easy to respect and admire. Having had the opportunity to work more closely with Gigi over the last few years she became a friend and mentor and was always available for advice and support. As tears form in my eyes for the loss of a friend, I join with others to celebrate her life and achievements with the many others who fell under her light and send strength, love and deep condolences to her family and friends. Rest in Love Gigi rest in love…

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Anjani, you and your siblings will be surrounded by your mother’s friends, not only to grieve with you but also to celebrate Gigi’s life. For those of us who will not be there to be with you, to share your sorrow and to appreciate your mother’s efforts to make this world a better place, we, Celita Eccher, Alejandra Scampini, Shirley Walters, Nicole Bidegain and many others would like to pay tribute to a feminist who was relentless in her efforts to push for gender justice, who knew no boundaries when exposing the unjustness of political and economic systems which dominate our world today, who developed tools and the language with us so we could be active agents in transforming our world, who dared to live an alternative lifestyle to show that women could choose to live a life that she fully embraces…your mother was a very courageous woman as she fought all kinds of battles…including this last one, which she fought hard because she wanted to still spend more time with all of you and because, she felt there were still many battles to be won…We will let her rest as we know that she has not only lived a full life but also managed to nurture the many feminists all over the world to continue the struggles that many feminists like her had devoted their lives to…you have been very privileged to have such a mother like her…and we are very honored to be able to work side by side with her. We embrace you!!!!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– It is with great sadness that we learnt today that one of our strongest and most beloved feminist left us. Gigi was a close friend of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) and collaborated with us on several occasions, in a committed and professional way. She joined the team of conveners of the ICAE Academy of Lifelong Learning Advocacy back in 2004 when we first organized this advocacy training course for adult educators in Buskerud, a small and isolated place in the middle of the Norwegian countryside. Gigi further joined other editions of this course in Cape Town, Montevideo, and so many other places. She was also an active member of the Gender and Education Office of ICAE and we shared unforgettable stories and experiences during the different editions of the World Social Forum. Gigi will always live in our hearts and memories and in our continued struggle for gender and social justice. On behalf of the Executive Committee of the International Council we would like to send you our heartfelt condolences. Rest in peace dear Gigi, we will miss you …

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– FOR GIGI FRANCISCO, the indomitable woman, friend and warrior. I hope you are listening. “If I Should Die,” Emily Dickinson If I should die, And you should live, And time should gurgle on, And morn should beam, And noon should burn, As it has usual done; If birds should build as early, And bees as bustling go,– One might depart at optionFrom enterprise below! ‘Tis sweet to know that stocks will stand When we with daisies lie, That commerce will continue, And trades as briskly fly. It make the parting tranquil And keeps the soul serene, That gentlemen so sprightly Conduct the pleasing scene!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Gigi was a leading light and co-founder of some remarkable groups like Miriam College’s WAGI. I know exactly when I met Gigi. It was in 1988 when I decided to drop all underground work with the National Democratic Front and become a legal health activist. It also meant working with legal women’s organizations and particularly women’s health organizations. Gigi welcomed me immediately without turfing or jealousy even if I was coming in from a different political formation and organization. She protected me from the rough and tumble of an arena I did not know. When our project ended after a little over a year, and I no longer needed her cover, she left me to fight for myself. I don’t think she even helped me on purpose as much as she always looked out that things were utterly fair especially for the less powerful, like the neophyte woman that I was. After that Gigi was always above board with me in subsequent work and never was she patronizing or condescending. Mahirap kasi maging condescending kung ikaw si Gigi at ang una niyang bati madalas ay, “putcha Guy anong tingin mo sa…” Tough and loyal sisterhood. That was Gigi. Gigi, for me and for many others you were “the original” in so many ways. Salamat kabaro at kapatid.Paalam na muna.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– We have all lost a dear friend and a remarkable person who infected everyone with her enthusiasm, passion and generosity. Her academic integrity shone through everything but also combined with her political engagement and her modesty. The feminist movement in Asia owes a lot to her strength and energy. We already miss her laughter and her love.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– Gigi has been one of very spirited and feisty member of civil society internationally who has not let a space pass without putting women/peoples rights agenda on the forefront of debates and actions. I wish her comfort to her and strength to her family as we continue to pray for her from this end of the globe.
