Founding member of DAWN Peggy Antrobus was guest to Dr. Clarice Barnes’ radio blog “Under The Tamarind Tree”, where she interweaves her personal story and memories with a broad range of issues, such as identities in the Caribbean, the limits and flaws of mainstream economics, power relations, and the tension between economic growth and social development.
From 1:06:00 she speaks about her experience founding DAWN, and then coordinating it during the 1990s. “What was really special about DAWN was that its analysis is holistic. We understood that you cannot talk about women without looking at the political, the economic, the social, the cultural… all of these are linked. The DAWN analysis really emphasized intersectionality, race, class, and gender”, she states.
Peggy is one of the pioneer feminist activists in the Caribbean. She is a founder member of several feminist organizations and the author of The Global Women’s Movement: Origins, Issues, and Strategies (Zed Books, 2004).
