About DAWN

Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) is a network of feminist scholars, researchers and activists from the economic South committed to women’s human rights, working for economic and gender justice and sustainable and democratic development. DAWN provides a forum for feminist research, analyses and advocacy on global issues (economic, social and political) affecting the livelihoods, living standards, rights and development prospects of women in regions of the South.

Position summary

DAWN is seeking a communications professional with a strong commitment to women’s rights and gender justice, to take the lead in developing and implementing DAWN’s communication strategy. A key objective of this work is to increase the reach and impact of DAWN analysis and to support other key result areas: advocacy, capacity building, social mobilizing, and organizational strengthening.

DAWN’s communication officer plays a key role in achieving the organization’s communication goals, including, but not limited to:

  • Strengthening and enlarging the network of Southern feminists and civil society actors engaged with DAWN and who use DAWN’s publications and analysis
  • Increasing DAWN’s visibility within the development and feminist global civil society spaces and strengthening its online institutional image, voice and profile.

The position requires the role holder to be a proactive team player, with creative ideas to develop content (including, articles, reports, summary versions of longer pieces produced by DAWN, scripts of audiovisual material, etc), digital communications, as well as communications campaigns and products. Candidates should have experience in substantial, broad-based strategic communications in social justice, development and/or feminist causes.

Candidates should have an adequate understanding of digital communication trends, including community management and demonstrated experience of being able to work remotely.

The Communications Officer works remotely as part of DAWN Global Secretariat and with DAWN Executive Committee members. The Communications Officer reports to the General Co-Coordinators and the Administrator.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of DAWN’s Communications Strategy, including designing and building specific communications’ strategies for DAWN’s activities and projects, and supervision of the Communications team.
  • Applying an expert understanding of digital trends, for the development and execution of online engagement. The role holder will work closely and in coordination with DAWN’s online communication officer in the production and adaptation of digital content for Social Networks.
  • Write and edit content, as needed, related to DAWN’s work and mission.
  • Coordination and involvement in the production of publication (including e-publications) and distribution of DAWN’s books, research papers, newsletters, articles and statements, etc.
  • Coordination and support of DAWN’s web maintenance.
  • Regular monitoring and evaluation of DAWN’s activities, communication actions and channels. This includes the production of activities reports for funders, evaluation surveys, keeping records of DAWN in the press, etc.
  • Coverage of DAWN’s participation in meetings, advocacy processes and campaigns, giving such participation visibility, as appropriate, in a multitude of sites and to targeted audiences.
  • Coverage and documentation of DAWN meetings and events, including related logistical support.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to staff and DAWN members to develop communication-related actions.
  • Support DAWN’s Administrator and Finance Officer in the logistics and budgeting for the production and distribution of communication products.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • University degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or related field. Complementary education or demonstrated experience in social studies, gender studies, development, or human rights will be highly valued.
  • A minimum of 5-years of demonstrated experience in organizational communications or related fields. Experience in social justice or feminist organizations, development and/or human rights’ fields will be highly valued.
  • Commitment to DAWN’s feminist values and advancing women’s human rights, gender equality and social justice.
  • Knowledge of advocacy communications and multilateral institutions.
  • Excellent written and oral communications in English. Written and spoken fluency in Spanish will be valuable.
  • Excellent judgment and ability to distil complex information into clear messaging for different audiences.
  • Social media savvy, with familiarity with WordPress websites.
  • Creative thinker with insight into the rapidly changing communications environment.
  • Strong sense of priority, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Multi-cultural awareness and assertiveness.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and remotely with diverse staff and across different time zones, with previous virtual-work experience.
