About DAWN

Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) is a network of feminist scholars, researchers and activists from the economic South committed to women’s human rights, working for economic and gender justice and sustainable and democratic development. DAWN provides a forum for feminist research, analyses and advocacy on global issues (economic, social and political) affecting the livelihoods, living standards, rights and development prospects of women in regions of the South.

Position summary

DAWN is seeking a highly motivated Online Communications Associate/Officer with a passion for storytelling and graphic design, and a strong commitment to women’s rights and gender justice. The main objective of this position is to implement our digital communications work through the creation of dynamic online content, strong messaging development and writing skills.

DAWN’s online presence supports our communicational strategy, which seeks increasing the reach and impact of DAWN analysis, advocacy, capacity building, social mobilizing, and organizational strengthening.

The position requires the role-holder to be a proactive team player, with creative ideas on using information, communication and media to address women’s rights and gender justice in the global context.

The Online Communications Associate/Officer should have a good understanding of digital communication trends and be able to produce content for Web and Social Media platforms. The role-holder should have situational awareness of current events and breaking news worldwide, with a focus on the women’s rights, and a good sense of timing and prioritization.

DAWN is a multilingual organization and works in English and Spanish. Our main working language is English, but candidates able to communicate fluently in both languages are desirable.

The Online Communications Associate/Officer works as part of DAWN Global Secretariat under the supervision of the DAWN’s Communications Officer and reports to the General Co-coordinators and the Administrator.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Guided by a monthly activity calendar, work with DAWN’s Communications Officer, General Co- Coordinators, Executive Committee members and staff, to create compelling digital content to inform and influence how people think about issues related to DAWN’s work.
  • Planning and handling regular postings on DAWN’s Social Network platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, MailChimp). This includes follow-up and interactions with allies’ organizations.
  • Production of digital content for DAWN’s website and assisting the coordination of DAWN’s web maintenance and support.
  • Create and edit graphics, short videos, email templates and other dynamic online content for use on DAWN’s online platforms and publications.
  • Design a plan to grow and sustain DAWN’s engagement and visibility on social media in accordance with our communication targets, and exploring the viability of new platforms for our presence.
  • Managing and increasing DAWN’s databases: alumni, associates, contacts in partner organizations, web subscribers, mailing lists.
  • Preparing monthly analytics reports of website and social media and digital performance. The role- holder should have at least basic knowledge of Google analytics.
  • Develop and report on key performance indicators around reach, engagement and retention of users across our platforms.
  • Keeping track and covering DAWN’s participation in meetings, advocacy processes and campaigns, in collaboration with DAWN’s communication officer.
  • Management and archiving of DAWNs photos and videos.
  • Documenting and logistics’ support of DAWN’s meetings including photo and video creation.
  • Assist with the publication (including e-publications) and distribution of DAWN’s books, research papers and other articles and statements (including editing manuscripts, papers and statements).
  • Organize and assist online meetings and webinars.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in digital communications and community management, ideally within a civil society organization or social movement.
  • Complementary education or demonstrated experience in social studies, gender studies, development, or human rights will be highly valued.
  • Experience in social justice or feminist organizations, development and/or human rights’ fields will be valued.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, fluency in Spanish is desirable.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new tools and platforms.
  • Experience editing WordPress websites and basic graphic design tools.
  • Familiarity with email management, including MailChimp and Google Suite.
  • Familiarity with online meeting software’s (e.g. GoToMeeting, Zoom, Webex, Google Hangout or similar).
  • Digital natives are preferred.
  • Virtual working experience.
  • Multi-cultural awareness and assertiveness.
  • Ability to thrive when working under deadlines without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Proactive, able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize well, with strong self-motivation.
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively and remotely with diverse staff, and across different time zones.
