This symposia are held every two years and have become the place where those concerned about health systems of all stripes come in. This session will introduce and briefly explore key debates about the nature of people-centred health systems. Drawing on the experience from Asia, Europe and Latin America, it will consider questions such as: What facets of people-centred health systems strengthen accountability for improved quality of care? How does a human-rights perspective support or hinder action to promote people-centredness in health systems? What role do health professionals play in promoting people-centred health systems? Are patient-centred initiatives simply an avenue for the already empowered to have greater influence over health care?
