“Marking the 25th anniversary of the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), this special issue of Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters (Volume 27, November 2019) critically assesses the unfinished agenda of securing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for all. The collection, comprising an editorial and six major commentaries from leading experts and advocates, argues that persistent gaps in implementation are fundamentally issues of accountability.
Authored by Gita Sen, Eszter Kismödi and Anneka Knutsson, the editorial frames the current moment as one of both progress and peril, where hard-won gains face significant political and ideological backlash. The contributors collectively analyse why the transformative, rights-based promises of Cairo remain unfulfilled for many, particularly the most marginalised. Moving beyond a simple stock-taking, the issue identifies systemic failures in political will, financing, and the integration of SRHR into broader health and development frameworks.
